Policy Recommendations for Developments in Product Data Technology October 1997 prepared by PDTAG-AM |
|
The UK is active in the application of PDT in most industrial sectors.
British Aerospace and Rolls Royce were the first two non-US companies to join the PDES Inc. consortium, and both have been involved in the exchange of STEP data in production use.
In the automotive sector, there are links with other European partners using ProSTEP and ODETTE, as well as several European-funded projects. In the electronics field, an EDIF Technical Centre is provided at the University of Manchester, which augments the activities in STEP. In the sectors of large-scale engineering, process plant, building and construction, and the maritime industries, there are many active participants and European projects.
In the defence industries, the Ministry of Defence is investigating the use of STEP for the rapid acquisition of machined parts, as a pilot study. There are also links between the standards development in ISO TC184/SC4 and UKCIC, the UK CALS Industry Council.
UKCIC is also involved in educational activities, supplementing the courses provided by ECSI and the programmes of studies provided by various universities at the levels of undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional education. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has recently funded the development of part of a Masters programme in PDT, with input from the Universities of Leeds, Cambridge and Cranfield.
