The PDTAG Plenary

The actions by this Workpackage are performed by the Plenary of the Product Data Technology Advisory Group, i. e., all PDTAG members contribute to its results, under the guidance of the WP Leader. Some of the recommended actions will be addressed by other Workpackages.

The PDTAG Plenary has met four times during the project, in September 94, January 95, May 95, and November 95. The next meeting will be held in March 1996.

The Plenary has organized its work in several tasks. Prof. Nowacki, TU Berlin was elected as Plenary Chairman. Dr. Jon Owen, Leeds was elected as Deputy Plenary Chairman. He also agreed to take over the editorship and coordination of the preparation of the Annual PDTAG Policy Recommendations.

The PDTAG Project Board

The PDTAG-AM Project Board assists and gives advice on the execution and management of the PDTAG-AM tasks. Members of the Project Board evaluate the progress of the PDTAG-AM and, if necessary, propose changes or amendments to the work plan defined in the Contract.

The PDTAG-AM Project Board consists of the partner representatives and the Workpackage Leaders:

The PDTAG Project Board has met five times during the project, in connection to Plenary or Review meetings. The next meeting will be held on 22 March 1996.

First Annual Project Review

WP1 was also responsible for coordinating the preparations for the First Annual Project Review held on June 23 in Brussels.

Based on the Review Report PDTAG-AM was considered successful in promoting European co-ordination in PDT in international standardisation. It is also effective in promoting co-operation between European PDT projects, though not yet sufficiently with regard to new projects. The activities of PDTAG based on Advanced Training Programmes, Newsletter, and Database projects were also favourably evaluated.

The next review date was set for 22 March 1996 in Brussels.

Policy Recommendations

The first Policy Recommendations has been discussed by PDTAG Plenary since May 1994 and by the Reviewers at the June 1995 meeting in Brussels.

The second Policy Recommendations appeared in August 1996.

You can download both papers from here. The files are packed in a ZIP-File including a PostScript-, a RTF- and a WinWord7-version of the file.

Further Policy Recommendations will be prepared in 1996 and 1997 within the same framework as the initial one.

Concurrent Engineering Meetings

In a liaison capacity and in order to show the PDTAG profile to an important new segment of the European PDT community, namely the Concurrent Engineering interest group, Prof. H. Nowacki took part in several Concurrent Engineering meetings and gave invited papers there on subjects related to PDT. These events were:

The participation of Prof. Nowacki in the Concurrent Engineering meetings gave an opportunity, too, to introduce PDTAG's activities to larger audiences.

The response to these presentations was good, many participants were not acquainted with STEP and product data modelling. Many persons asked to be kept informed about PDTAG's work and requested to receive the Newsletter. Concurrent Engineering will become a branch of PDT with fast increasing importance.

European Projects Meetings

Another important activity organised by PDTAG is the European Projects meeting during ISO STEP meetings. This kind of meeting is usually held on the opening day (Sunday) of STEP week and serves as an informal forum to coordinate views and objectives among European participants, notably from ESPRIT projects, regarding the desired results of ISO week.

European Projects meetings were held at all STEP meetings in the last several years. They are usually well attended by between 20 and 30 people. Each participant gets a chance to report about priorities in his or her work. Minutes are kept and later circulated to the delegates. Most participants also get the PDTAG Newsletter and can make inputs to it reporting about their projects.

The task of preparing and running these meeting, which was previously performed by Wim Gielingh and temporarily by Horst Nowacki, has recently been taken over by Nigel Shaw (EuroSTEP, UK).
