                   Invitation to the Special Session on

                    Petri Nets: Estimation and Control

                   The 9th IEEE International Conference on
         Emerging Technologies and Factory  Automation; ETFA’2003
                   September 16-19, 2003, Lisbon, Portugal

TOPICS OF THE INVITED SESSION

In the last decades Petri nets have been widely used in many application
areas, such as manufacturing, transportation and communication, 
because they offer a good trade-off between modeling power and analytical 
tractability. 

Nevertheless, there exist several problems in the area of analysis, 
estimation and control of dynamic systems modeled by Petri nets that 
are still open or quite unexplored. As an example, the state estimation 
problem is a topic of paramount importance in all areas of automatic 
control and still in the setting of discrete event systems, and only 
few results are known for Petri nets. 

The aim of this session is that of presenting original approaches for 
the control of Petri nets: structural techniques for controller synthesis, 
control algorithms using observers, deadlock avoidance techniques, 
and so on.
